YO x Nexus Hospitals Grand Rounds 2025

Interested in working through real-world cases alongside fellow optometrists and ophthalmologists? Looking to improve your management of infectious keratitis and glaucoma patients, and refresh your knowledge on the latest diagnostic criteria for vitreomacular traction and diabetic retinal emergencies?

Join us for an interactive, in-person evening of clinical conversations designed to sharpen your diagnostic skills and enhance your management strategies in corneal, glaucoma and vitreoretinal care. This event will feature small-group, table-run discussions led by Dr Luke Northey, Dr Nicole Lim and Dr Mitchell Lee, offering a unique opportunity for case-based learning and direct engagement with ophthalmologists and optometry colleagues in a relaxed, collaborative setting.

Learning Objectives & Speakers:

Infectious keratitis: the good, the bad and the ugly

Dr Luke Northey

  1. Identify common clinical signs in infectious keratitis
  2. Develop an infectious keratitis differential diagnosis based upon clinical signs
  3. Discuss antimicrobial therapies for infectious keratitis
  4. Discuss antiviral therapies for infectious keratitis

Dr Luke Northey is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in corneal, glaucoma, and cataract surgery. Dr Northey completed ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital where he worked as the professorial senior registrar and served as the chair of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists trainee representative group.

He undertook fellowship training in glaucoma at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, gaining expertise in incisional and microinvasive glaucoma surgical techniques in addition to medical and laser glaucoma therapies. He then completed a cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. During this fellowship he gained experience in all aspects of corneal transplant surgery, complicated cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, and surface-based therapeutic and refractive laser procedures.

Dr Northey was awarded the Sydney Hospitallers’ Norman Rose and the RANZCO Trevelyn-Smith travelling scholarships in support of his fellowship training. He has published in peer reviewed medical journals, presented at national and international ophthalmology conferences, and is a clinical associate lecturer at the University of Sydney. Dr Northey is also currently a staff specialist ophthalmologist at Sydney Eye Hospital. To read more, click here.

The well controlled but progressing patient: Managing Refractory Glaucoma

Dr Nicole Lim

  1. Develop a structured approach to glaucoma progression at target IOP, including strategies to optimise adherence, assess true pressure control, and address IOP fluctuations.
  2. Recognise when and how to investigate for non-glaucomatous co-pathology in patients with apparent disease progression
  3. Gain insight into surgical options, timing of intervention and emerging neuroprotective strategies under investigation.

Dr Nicole Lim is a comprehensive general ophthalmologist with a sub-speciality interest in glaucoma. Dr Lim earned her undergraduate degree in medicine through the University of Newcastle and furthered her studies with a Master of International Public Health from the University of Sydney during her internship years. She completed her vocational training in Ophthalmology through the Prince of Wales training program in NSW.

She has completed two clinical glaucoma sub-speciality fellowships, at Wellington Regional Hospital in New Zealand and The Bristol Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. Through these fellowships, she has developed expertise in managing complex glaucoma cases and performing advanced glaucoma surgeries, including filtration and revision procedures, Preserflo Micro-shunt and tube surgeries, minimally invasive glaucoma treatments (MIGS), and complex cataract surgery.

Dr Lim serves as a staff specialist at Prince of Wales Public Hospital. She also provides outreach services as a visiting medical officer to Broken Hill Hospital and the remote communities of Cobar and Bourke, in Far West NSW, as a part of the Outback Eye Service. Dr Lim consults at Hurstville and Miranda and operates at Kogarah Private Hospital. To read more, click here.

Rapid Fire Retina

Dr Mitchell Lee

  1. Understand the latest diagnostic criteria and management of vitreomacular traction disorders
  2. Understand the diagnosis and initial management of diabetic retina emergencies

Dr Mitchell Lee is an ophthalmologist specialising in vitreoretinal surgery, complex anterior segment, cataract, and lens surgery. Dr Lee studied medicine through the University of Sydney Medical School and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and completed his training in Ophthalmology through Prince of Wales Hospital.

Dr Lee undertook further training in complex anterior segment surgery and medical retina at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Centre for Eye Health. He then completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Westmead Hospital, where he trained in all aspects of surgical management for retinal disease, as well as gaining further experience in middle segment surgery, and complex anterior segment surgery.

Dr Lee was one of the inaugural Sarks Medical Retina Research Fellows at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney continuing the pioneering research legacy of John and Shirley Sarks in the early detection and characterisation of age-related macular degeneration.
