      • Describe age-appropriate approaches to vision testing in young children and identify common behavioural challenges and strategies to maintain cooperation during testing.
      • Choose suitable vision assessment methods based on the child’s age and cognitive ability and demonstrate how to modify testing when children are non-verbal, pre-verbal, or uncooperative.
      • Understand how to perform accurate binocular vision testing in the context of strabismus and amblyopia.
      • Understand how to accurately assess ocular motilities in young children and interpret findings to detect strabismus, nerve palsies, or other motility disorders.

      • Identify and conduct core visual perceptual tests for children, and recognize when vision therapy is appropriate.
      • Select and administer tests for ocular motor/tracking problems and interpret results in the context of school or learning challenges.

A massive thank you to Dr. Cheryl Au and Dr. Michael Rossiter-Thornton who guided our members with their foreign body removal skills and delivered exceptional presentations with interesting presentations on macular and retinal cases and debunking multifocal and extended focus IOLs.

We would also like to hugely thank Nexus Hospitals for the use of hospital space and equipment, Optimed for the use of foreign body removal equipment and slit lamp, as well as Coopervision for their continued support. Kickstarting the first in a series of webinars, Dr Parth Shah led us through interesting and interactive cases in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. I don't know about you, but that was one of the best home isolation Saturday evenings I had!

This first webinar features Dr Parth Shah, a Sydney-based ophthalmologist with extensive training across Australia, the U.K. and the U.S.A.. He is highly skilled at managing complex paediatric disorders such as cataracts, congenital corneal opacity, glaucoma, genetic eye diseases and complex strabismus in children and adults. YO New Grad Bootcamp: From Pupil to Practitioner

Arguably one of our more popular events, the Bootcamp was a refreshing start to 2020. We tackled topics from time management, referral writing to finance management. Are you a fifth year student? Lock it in your diaries for 2021, we're already gearing up for our next one!

      Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020

It was great to see you all at our events this year. From YOTSS (Young Optometrist Therapeutic Study Session) to the YO & CFEH Trivia Night, we look forward to bringing you bigger and better events. Keep you eyes peeled, we're updating the calendar and working hard planning.

      Abating Anterior Anomalies

      Ultimo - 17th June 2018

We had the lovely A/Prof Colin Chan (ophthalmologist) and Dr Margaret Lam (optometrist) join us on a rather chilly Sunday to present their expertise and experiences with Assessing (and managing) Anterior Anomalies!

Dr Margaret Lam covered an abundance of tips and tricks with advanced contact lens fitting specifically for RGP and scleral fits. A/Prof. Colin Chan imparted immense knowledge of identifying and managing Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia, Corneal graft rejections and updated us with the latest changes in keratoconus. Finishing off with some real life case studies, YO’s Assessing Anterior Anomalies 2018 was a huge success. All of our members came out more confident than ever to tackle these tricky patients!

      "Paediatrics Workshop"

      Ultimo - 12th May 2018

You asked and we delivered! After much talk and requests for a paediatrics night, we had our three fantastic speakers (Liz Jackson who is a paediatric and behavioural optometrist, Justine Tucker who is an experienced vision therapist, and Dr Michael Jones, a well known and respected paediatric ophthalmologist) come together and deliver fantastic presentations.

Liz's enthusiasm and expertise left us more confident and her tips and tricks are sure to help us better manage our little patients. Following Liz's presentation was Justine, who demonstrated how we could utilise vision training techniques to patients who experience accommodative or convergence difficulties.  Dr Michael Jones who ran through his experiences of examining children and how we could best manage and communicate with both nervous children and their parents or carers.

"Bootcamp - from pupil to practitioner"

      Ultimo - 4th February 2018

On the 4th of February we had our much anticipated annual Bootcamp for the new graduates. This was a CPD day jam-packed with information, questions and food to get our fresh new graduates ready for their first few weeks as an optometrist (finally!). Congratulations again!

Thank you to our speakers: Andrew McKinnon, Abdul Hamidi, Sarah Pham, Sarah Tait, Rose Huang, Megan Tu, Wilson Luu, Theresa Bui, Wendy Saw and Anna Su.

      "Abating Anterior Eye Anxiety"

      Ultimo - 16 October 2016

On the 16th of October, 2016, we held a CPD event, with therapeutic points, on anterior eye challenges we may face in our day to day practice and how to manage them. Check out the day in review video above.

Thank you to our speakers: Stephanie Watson, Heidi Hunter, Margaret Lam and Narelle Hine for their outstanding effort and exciting talks. It was a great chance to catch up with everyone who attended, YO and FroYOs!

      Contact Lens Conundrums"

      Sydney - 3 August 2016

On the night of Wednesday August 3, a deluge was nigh. But it didn't stop these brave souls from fighting through the tempered and harsh weather to speak and learn about their passion: contact lens conundrums. Thanks to our wonderful speakers: Dr. Theresa Bui, Dr. Whitney Lam and Dr. Jim Kokkinakis for their time and effort on the day.

Also thanks to Dr. Angelica Ly for organising the event and being an excellent MC! Thank you to all the guests who attended and making this event fab-ou-lous - your dedication is legendary!

We learnt about the basics of contact lens prescribing, multifocal contact lens prescribing and then the bane of most optometrists who prescribe contact lenses - dealing with contact lens compliance.

The evening was so insightful and we gained so much knowledge on how established and successful optometrists went about prescribing. We also had a lovely buffet dinner on the night. We hope to do this again soon!

      "YO Paediatrics Day"
      Ultimo - 5 June 2016

Dust off your retinoscopes because young optometrists are ready to see children.

A company of just over 50 guests warmed The Central Room as they sought shelter from the terrible torrential rain on the 5th of June.

Thanks to our speakers: Dr. Grace Wee, Dr. Shaun Chang, Dr. Liz Jackson, and Dr. Michael Jones for their informative talks and their time and effort! Also thanks to our patron sponsor CooperVision, and CR Surfacing for their generosity for the day. To read more about our paediatrics day, please follow the link here.

      "YO Christmas Party"

      Newtown - 11 November 2016

On the 11th of November, YO (NSW/ACT) held our annual Christmas gathering at Thai Pothong, Newtown. The night was full of fun and games, yummy food and all round festive cheer. Highlights of the night included: hilarious optometry musical parodies by fellow YO, Richard Lin, YO Outstanding Contribution award winner, Sarah Tait and a spectacular round of Celebrity Heads. We would like to thank everyone who attended and hope that you all had a blast networking and catching up with YOs and FroYOs like we did! The YO Executives would also like to thank Sub-Committee members, Meesha and Herenia, for being such awesome organisers and MCs for the night!

We hope to see you at our Christmas party next year!

"How to forge a successful career in Optometry!
..or is optometry really for you?"
      Ultimo - 16 July 2016

We ran our very first networking event for YOs on the 16th of July, providing them with the opportunity to connect with established optometrists from a variety of backgrounds. It was a huge success and we are grateful for the phenomenal talks from our two guest speakers: Bashir ‘Baz’ Youssef, inspirational life coach and retinitis pigmentosa patient, and Amira Howari, optometrist. We would again like to thank our patron sponsor, CooperVision, for their support of this event.

Established optometrists present on the night were: Amira Howari, Monica Lette, Joe Tanner, Allan Poulter, Khanh Tien Truong, Chih-Chi Lee, Dina Chungue, Susan Ang, Albert Lee, John Evans, Pauline Kang, Jennifer Long, Mark Koszek, Narelle Hine and Heidi Hunter.

All these optometrists had their own specialities, success and passion in their specified fields of optometry. We were all so lucky to be in the same room to network and mingle with these inspirational optometrists!!

And for once, it wasn't raining during our events!
